As the oldest veteran manufacturer of musical movements, REUGE commenced musical movement production in 1886. It now focuses mainly on high-end large-size musical movements including 32-note, 36-note, 52-note and 72-note models, as well as finished music boxes. Priced at a premium, REUGE products are ideal for collection purposes.
- SANKYO, Japan
SANKYO started producing musical movements in 1948. Its product specifications are largely modeled after REUGE, covering 18-note, 32-note, 52-note and 72-note variants. By developing dedicated automated production equipment, SANKYO drastically cut manufacturing costs. In particular, the price of its mainstream 18-note basic model dropped sharply from nearly 100 USD for REUGE to less than 10 USD, which greatly reshaped the global music box market.
During its prime years, SANKYO's annual sales of standard 18-note movements hit 100 million units, establishing a solid brand reputation worldwide. Facing fierce competition from SANKYO, REUGE gradually shifted its focus entirely to high-end segments. Later on, the entry of China's YUNSHENG brought another major shift to the industry landscape.
- YUNSHENG, China
YUNSHENG rolled out its first batch of musical movements in 1991. It independently developed the abrasive wheel group tuning process to bypass SANKYO's patented milling cutter processing technology, boosting production efficiency by 10 times. In addition, the brand launched intelligent flexible automatic assembly lines specially designed for musical movements, further strengthening its market competitiveness.
Driven by YUNSHENG's powerful competition, SANKYO witnessed a continuous decline in sales and finally closed its domestic production lines in Japan. Its basic movements are now OEM-manufactured by a Taiwanese enterprise and produced in mainland China. Currently, SANKYO's annual output stands at around 3 million units, while YUNSHENG achieves an annual production capacity of 20 million units, ranking it the world's largest musical movement manufacturer.
